Headspace Animation

Headspace provides support and counselling in youth mental health services. They needed some animations created for social media to communicate to a younger audience, and to encourage teens to talk to each other about their feelings, and come in for support if they’re feeling low.

Working with Headjam, I was able to conceptualise and illustrate various character designs for the series of short animations. Animal characters would be used to represent the target audience, as it gave teens abstract personas to identify with and allowed us to remain gender neutral. After conducting market research, it was evident that, by adolescence, Australian teens were less receptive to typical ‘Aussie’ animals such as koalas and kangaroos. A collection of ‘misfits’ were developed instead; invasive pest species tap into the psyche of youth often feeling like outsiders, excluded or unwanted.
